Scoil Lorcain is an existing Gaelscoil Primary school built in the 1970’s with approximately 400 pupils and required total refurbishment and replacement of existing substandard classroom accommodation. A 1,320sq.m classroom extension was built on to the existing 1,500sq.m 1970’s school building which was totally reconfigured to comply with current Department of Education Technical Guidance Documents and current building regulations including fire compliance and disability access throughout. A new centrally placed main entrance was located at the junction between the existing school building and the new extension with an easily identifiable entrance canopy which was lacking in the previous school. External playground spaces were maximised on a very difficult sloping site in a conservation area which required multiple phases during construction while the building was continuously operational.
