The buildings in Christchurch Place date to the early 80’s and, unusually, turn their backs to the street. Entrance to each unit is via the central courtyard and, other than a gesture of vague­ly mimicking the tower and roof windows of Christ Church Ca­thedral, the development virtual­ly ignores its surroundings. Our client is a major advertising firm and wanted not only to redesign the interiors but also to estab­lish more of a presence on the street. The unique setting was a clear direction to celebrate Christ Church and we wanted to create a number of relation­ships with the building. Using glass to reflect from the outside and to frame views of the Cathe­dral from the inside was a fairly logical approach. We broke the orthogonal geometry of the ex­isting cluster of buildings to ac­knowledge more clearly the Ca­thedral. The entrance has been moved to the corner from the in­ner courtyard and the architec­tural treatment
