The buildings in Christchurch Place date to the early 80’s and, unusually, turn their backs to the street. Entrance to each unit is via the central courtyard and, other than a gesture of vaguely mimicking the tower and roof windows of Christ Church Cathedral, the development virtually ignores its surroundings. Our client is a major advertising firm and wanted not only to redesign the interiors but also to establish more of a presence on the street. The unique setting was a clear direction to celebrate Christ Church and we wanted to create a number of relationships with the building. Using glass to reflect from the outside and to frame views of the Cathedral from the inside was a fairly logical approach. We broke the orthogonal geometry of the existing cluster of buildings to acknowledge more clearly the Cathedral.
